The function
A celebration that belongs to her
The half-saree function — also called the langa voni function, and langa davani in some families — celebrates a girl coming of age. Most families hold it somewhere between the ages of ten and sixteen; the exact age is a family decision, not a fixed rule.
It is its own occasion, separate from any wedding in the family. Close relatives are invited, there is usually a short pooja, and the girl is dressed for the first time in a langa voni instead of the langa and top she wore as a child. It is often the first time she is photographed in an adult drape, and the pictures are kept for years.
Years later, the same girl will drape a full pattu cheera for her own wedding, chosen very differently. The half-saree function is not a preview of a wedding; it has its own cloth and its own rules.

The langa's waist is usually a drawstring or an adjustable band, so it can be bought weeks ahead without any trouble. The blouse is the piece that should be measured and stitched close to the function date — two to three weeks before, not two to three months — because that is where a growing girl outgrows a garment first.
