Madhuparkam sarees — the white set for bride and groom
Madhuparkam is the pure white unbleached handloom set worn just before the muhurtham — a bordered cotton saree for the bride and a matching pancha and kanduva for the groom. The border colour must be identical on both, which is why the two are sold as one pair.

What madhuparkam is, and when it happens
Madhuparkam is the welcome ceremony held just before the muhurtham, when the groom is received as an honoured guest and given a fresh set of cloth to wear. The bride wears a pure white unbleached handloom cotton saree with a coloured border; the groom wears a matching pancha and kanduva in the same border colour. Together the two pieces are often called the madhuparkam vastralu.
Some families dip the cloth lightly in turmeric water before it is worn, giving it a soft pale tint rather than staying pure white — others keep it plain. Both are correct; it depends on family and community practice, and this is done at home, not at the shop.
Madhuparkam is not the same as the muhurtham saree worn immediately after it. That is usually a richer pattu, chosen for talambralu and saptapadi.

The one rule to know
The bride's border and the groom's border must match
Border shade varies a little from one handloom length to the next. A saree bought at one shop and a pancha bought at another are unlikely to match exactly once you see them together under wedding lighting — ask for both pieces cut from the same length.
It is also why families abroad often cannot find this set locally. General saree shops overseas stock finished silk and printed cotton, not unbleached handloom cotton woven with a matching border for one specific ceremony.

Should the madhuparkam cloth be dipped in turmeric?
Some families dip it lightly in turmeric water before it is worn, others keep it plain white. Both are correct — follow what your family and purohit expect.
Can a madhuparkam set be sent abroad?
